Avi Nesher’s acclaimed film mixes comedy with drama as it tells a tender coming-of-age story that also serves as commentary on life in Haifa in the late sixties. Arik, a teenage boy, gets a job working for Yankele Bride, a mysterious matchmaker and Holocaust survivor during the summer of 1968. As Arik begins to learn the mysteries of the human heart through his work with Yankele, the disparate parts of Arik’s life collide in unexpected, often funny and very moving ways. The Matchmaker goes beyond the traditional coming-of-age story, causing us to look at how we treat those on the fringe or outside the norm.

Cinema Cafe: A Conversation with Eyal Shechter

Join us on Wednesday, November 20 at 10:00 am for the first in our new Cinema Cafe series of conversations with actors, directors, producers and others in a more intimate setting. This special event is an opportunity to speak with Eyal about the movie (he as a small role), life in Haifa where the film takes place, his own personal experiences and his career as an actor and musician. Eyal was part of a well known musical group in Israel and will play some of his music. “A Conversation” takes place in a private home in Las Campanas, about 12 minutes from the Plaza and directions will be provided upon purchase of tickets.
